Mission: Utilizing compassionate, career-focused mentoring
relationships to guide high risk youth so they may establish goals
which lead to high school graduation, higher education and/or
successful employment.
- Referral
Process: 8th and 9th grade Bridge students referred to TTS staff for
interview and matched with mentor. Job Readiness/Summer Employment
component: Bridge teens who successfully complete 8-week Job Readiness
Training course and meet age requirements are eligible for selection
for employment in Baptist or St. Vincent’s Hospital TTS Summer
Employment Program
This unique alliance provides job readiness classes with mentoring
followed by full time summer employment for teens living in some of
Jacksonville's highest rates of crime, poverty and unemployment.
Selected Bridge youth chose a career interest then receive ten weeks of
targeted mentoring and career skill training from a professional in
that particular field.
Since 1998, Bridge youth have had the opportunity to explore many
exciting careers, ones that previously seemed unattainable, such as
law, medicine, public relations and corporate communications.
PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS:
Since its inception, over 229 Bridge youth have received job readiness training including:
- How to write a resume
- The interview process
- Social skills at work
- Dressing appropriately for the job
- Answering the telephone
- Decision making
- Budgeting Your Pay
176 youth have
received year round mentors. Tipping the Scale provides
opportunities in employment, mentoring, public speaking and spiritual
support for over 50 Bridge youth each year.
