Alternative to Out-of-School Suspension (ATOSS)

Suspended Students Stay Productive at ATOSS

The Jacksonville Journey Crime Prevention Initiative resulted in a unique partnership between The Bridge of Northeast Florida, Inc. and Duval County Public Schools. The program, named ATOSS, opened its doors in April 2009 at The Weaver Zone on the main Bridge campus. The Bridge is one of five citywide sites offering a program to keep suspended students engaged in productive activities.

A component of the ATOSS program is a computer lab that allows students to remain engaged with school assignments and homework while out-of-school on suspension. ATOSS students also participate in anger management counseling and conflict resolution workshops.

ATOSS Makes an Impact for Students

The 2010-20111 school year had 1710 students attending the Alternative to Out-of-School Suspension program at The Bridge.

Although suspended from school, students who attend the program are not counted absent from school and have the opportunity to keep up with course work using the Compass Odyssey system. As an added benefit, youth who are introduced to The Bridge through ATOSS are offered the opportunity to enroll in other Bridge programs
