Satellite Programs

satellitle_picLack of positive resources for at-risk youth is a problem in many of Jacksonville’s poorest neighborhoods. Recreation centers in neighborhood parks have fallen into disrepair and closed over the years. Programs have been cut due to reduced funding.

The time of the day for highest juvenile crime is after school between 3 and 6 PM. Negative peer pressure, idle time, exposure to violence and hopelessness result in drug use, failure and crime. A 2007 JCCI study on violence recommended prevention through more positive activities and role models for youth.

In its 2007 Profile Report: Jacksonville Child Trends & Statistics: 1990-2005, the Jacksonville Children’s Commission suggests that the after-school programs it funds only reach “about 20% of the need of at-risk children.”
